Jason Ganahl heads to regionals of Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour with higher ranking than in 2012
Jason Ganahl has learned a few things over the past year, after he placed 17th in the regional finals of the Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour in Albuquerque a year ago and failed to move on to the national barbecue championship in Bentonville, Ark., — where a $150,000 purse beckoned the winners.
“Brisket is what kept me from going to the nationals last year,” the self-styled “Sultan of Swine” said earlier this week, as he rumbled along the interstate on his way to this year’s regional showdown in Las Vegas with 16 chicken thighs, four pork shoulders, three racks of ribs, and a single brisket.
“And this year, I also spent a lot of time on chicken because that was one of my more inconsistent categories.”
Brisket looks like less of a pitfall this year after Ganahl, owner and sole member of Superior-based barbecue team GQue, placed a respectable fourth in the category at the local Sam’s Club cook-off in Thornton at the end of March. He came in second overall in the contest, besting celebrity competitive barbecue chef Johnny Trigg and his Smokin Triggers.
