We will be high this weekend and surrounded by smoke! Since legalizing marijuana this sounds like the start of another Colorado pot joke but its not. Fairplay is the home to the “highest” BBQ contest in the nation. Competitors will be burning the good smoke at 10,000 feet. Fairplay is the town made famous by Cartman, Kenny and the rest of the South Park Crew that inspired the hit TV show on Comedy Central.
Bar hoppin’ in South Park
Last year was the inaugural year for the South Park BBQ Competition and I couldn’t be more excited to come back to compete again. There is a downtown area with a handful of restaurants and bars along with the historic South Park museum. I had an absolute ball bar hopping with the Swinestone cowboy last year. Swiney forgot it takes a little less booze at 10k to get your mind right and he ended up passed out for a few hours on Friday night. He’s no amateur though, when we woke up he cooked liked the champion he is and took home the Grand Championship. I will have to find someone else to bar hop with as he wont be back to defend his title this year. Burnin’ Bob last years Reserve Grand Champ will be looking to take the last walk as will last years 3rd place finisher Flyboy.

They are going to have to hold off a stable of RMBBQA top flight teams like Jo-Bawbs, Grillin Beavers, Backdraft and Stars and Stripes – I personally am looking forward to another weekend in the mountains and the beautiful drive into Fairplay. I would be remised if I didn’t admit I am also looking forward to one of Pig Floyds pain killers on Saturday morning. The anchor is staying home this weekend and wont be with me so I am on GC alert.
