Its been a looooooong time since we have taken you under the tent with one of the teams from the RMBBQA. Too Long in fact – So without further adieu lets go under the tent with one of the best brisket cooks in our area – The Grillin Beavers!

You have one of the most memorable names in the RMBBQA – How did you come up with the name Grillin’ Beavers? Who is all on your team?  Our team name is just based on our members last name.  We are John and Bobbi Beaver and the popular star of the team, our grandson, Johnny Beaver

What do you like to do when you’re not BBQ’n?  Before we started BBq’n, we spent a lot of time camping, boating, and fishing.  But being addicted to BBQ doesn’t really leave a lot of spare time.

Tell us a little about your equipment what kind of smoker do you use? What is your favorite “gadget” item you like to use when BBQing?  We use a basic, simple Lang offset “stick burner” and a Pitmaker insulated vertical “safe”.  A thermapen would be about the most gadgety item in our traditional style arsenal.

What BBQ accomplishment are you most proud of and why?  Winning Grand Champion in Osage City, KS is not only our first GC but was at a comp composed of 72 of the very best teams in KCBS.

What BBQ contest is your favorite and why?  We enjoy bbq contests for more than the competition, when there are a lot of fun activities to entertain Johnny, that’s a big plus for us.

Do you have any BBQ goals for 2014, if so what are they?  We are always trying to do our best to win and improve our standings but winning a GC to get into the American Royal Invitational is a big goal.

What is one thing you learned through the school of hard knocks that wish you knew when you first got started?  We’ve really learned how addictive this hobby (lifestyle) can be.

What is your Favorite Non BBQ restaurant and what do you like to get there?  We go to several local Mexican food restaurants.  We like just about everything they offer.

Wildcard is there anything you would like the readers to know about you, your team or BBQ in general that was not asked?  Better than anything else about BBQ is the genuine concern the competitors in our area show towards each other, being involved in something where people are so willing to go out of their way to help those they’re competing against is one of the biggest things that brings us back every week.

Raaaaaaaaah! Who could forget Johnny at Fairplay last year?
